Q: Straw Purchase — On 7/16/15 at approximately 10:30 a.m. an individual received a denial for a handgun purchase. I documented it, added his info to our denials spreadsheet (which now has about 4 names I believe), and filed the 4473 in our non-sales folder. I discussed appeals information with the individual and told him I would email him the link to appeal and that, at this point, that was his only option. At 9 p.m. the same day, I logged into our POS system and saw that at 5:30 p.m., the denied individual’s wife purchased from one of my employees the very same firearm. I immediately tried calling the phone number logged in as hers, but it was the wrong number. I also left a message and emailed her brother-in-law to attempt to get accurate contact information but have not been able to get through. First thing 7/17/15 I will attempt to reach the couple to at minimum see about returning the firearm. I will also talk with the employee to find out what happened. I will also be revising our Standard Operating Procedures to include an immediate email to all employees about any denials we receive — a denials spreadsheet for reference by employees already being part of our SOP. Advice on how else to proceed further would be much appreciated.
