Q: We had a 20 year old come in with his father. The son picked out the handgun and discussed the price, but the father said he was buying it. We told them we could not allow the transfer because it was obviously the son’s gun. They father said “it won’t be his until he is 21, then I will sell it to him”. We said that was considered a straw purchase. Were we right to not do the transfer? People get mad about this when it is the child but in this case I knew it was the son’s gun and the son was paying for it so it was not even close to being a gift.
