NICS – Changes to System

posted on January 18, 2019

Q: Today we got an email from NICS addressing upcoming changes to the NICS system. We have a couple questions about some of the updates NICS is implementing. NICS is going to require the submitting user to attest that the government issued photo ID exactly matches the information submitted. In our state some photo ID’s only have a customers middle initial. We have the customer submit their whole middle name on the 4473. We understand this has been addressed in help desk questions in the past, and this is acceptable. Our concern is with the upcoming NICS change requiring us to attest that the information submitted matches an ID exactly when the middle name is required but the ID only has an initial. We understand that on the 4473 if a customer has a whole middle name it must be listed and ATF is OK with just a middle initial on an ID, but now it appears NICS is requiring a middle name to be submitted from an ID that doesn’t have the whole middle name. Another issue we can see arising is that our ID’s are good for a period of several years and have weight listed on them. People’s weight can change. How should this be addressed, we realize we cannot coach someone on how to fill the 4473 out, but are we allowed to tell them they should use the height and weight listed on their ID?
