Q: We have a what’s called a “Knox Box” that was installed on the outside of our building that is designed to hold a store key in order to help facilitate a faster entry by the fire department into the building and to avoid excessive damage in the process. The fire department does not mandate although strongly recommends a key be placed into this box. Our reservations are that if we were selling clothing or cell phones I am not as worried if someone who knows what is in those boxes, breaks into the box and thus into my store with the supplied key. However being that we sell and store firearms, what is the legal, if any advice, on providing the key? As well, what are we responsible for as far as legal ramifications/accountability if someone does break in using that key? I can see the headlines now, “Local gun store had a key outside their building and the criminals broke in.”
