Q: I have a question regarding an AR-15 style pistol/rifle. If the lower receiver has an adjustable buffer tube with no stock on it and a barrel shorter than 16 inches- it is a pistol? Our understanding is to prevent accidentally putting a stock on it- most pistol manufacturers place oversize smooth buffer tubes on the lower receiver. IS this a valid understanding? Or does an adjustable buffer tube classify the firearm as a rifle? We’re trying to figure out if, for example, our gunsmith accepts a rifle that has a 10″ barrel and an adjustable buffer tube and NO stock- it’s a pistol? Or would that firearm need a smooth oversize buffer tube?
