CA – Model 85 Line Gun

posted on January 18, 2019

Q: We have a client in California wanting to purchase a Naval Company Inc. model 85 “line gun” with barrel extension. The model 85 is a 14.5″ barreled smooth bore, break action single shot .45-70 retrofitted with a line dispensing kit. We have never dealt with a “line gun” before. We understand that this is a firearm by definition. We do not know if this is considered a “short barreled rifle”, “short barreled shotgun” or “destructive device” per California regulations if the barrel extension is not permanently attached. Or if that even matters to the California DOJ. Ultimately we want to know if it’s legal to transfer this firearm to an individual in California or not.
