Q: I believe I have a handle on what constitutes a proper government document to support an ID for the purpose of correcting an address for the 4473. My question concerns the customer’s name, not address. I spent most of yesterday reading the Client Solutions responses for 4473 issues (still have about 20% to go). I learned quite a bit. Incorrect addresses I have a handle on. I’m still not clear on the issue of names. i.e. If the customer says the name on the 4473 IS IN FACT the customer’s proper, complete, legal name, then it must match the name on the ID or it’s a no sale. That said, what about obvious typos? Some responses indicate the use another form of government ID (is this different from a government document?) to support an ID. Does this work for names? Example #1: if the customer’s name is Michelle Kimberly Smith but the ID says Michelle K. Smith, can I use a government document that spells out the middle name like a vehicle registration or how about another actual government picture ID card or license like a military ID, a CCW license or an FAA pilot’s license or am I simply at a “cannot proceed until the customer gets a new license or ID with a correct full name on it” point? Example #2: Currently have a customer whose name includes “Frederick”. His ID incorrectly spells it “Fredrick”. Can I use a government document – specifically his current vehicle registration that spells his name correctly to proceed or is this a no sale? Note: The reason this sort of thing is a big problem and why I need to nail it down is because, according to the customer, CA DMV refuses to make a correction (even though they, DMV, have it both ways on their own docs; a CA CDL and a CA Vehicle Reg) unless presented with a birth certificate. This is something of a problem since the customer was born in another country. We run into same and similar problems with CA DMV, the ONLY source of an acceptable form of ID for gun transfers in CA, on an almost daily basis. Thank you for your help.
