A&D – Logging Serial Numbers off Firearm (see Note at bottom of solution)

posted on January 18, 2019

Q: We have an imported AK that has a serial number discrepancy between what is recorded on the box, invoice and what is actually on the firearm. The serial number on the box in bar code form, and the serial number on the invoice from the distributor says A1-16570-13. The distributor just scans the supplied bar code is my assumption. When you look at the firearm the actual serial number is A1-16570-13 space RO. I called ATF and inquired what is the correct serial number. No RO or with the RO suffix? The IOI stated to go off the gun and include the RO. I did mention that wouldn’t that change the serial number and now make it different from presumably what the importer has on file and what the distributor says they shipped me and he said all they have been told is to always go off the gun. What is the correct entry into bound book? A1-16570-13 A1-16570-13 space RO.  Also if their appears to be a visible space in the serial number prior to the RO. Should that be recorded as such or would this instance just be A1-16570-13RO without a space as ARSS system will not allow spaces.
