Q: We had a customer come in to purchase a handgun. He completed the 4473 and as we were reviewing it before calling in the background check, we noticed an inconsistency with his last name. He has a last name that is made up of two separate words. The 4473 reflected this but his drivers license did not. Example: “Fair Banks” on the 4473, and “Fairbanks” on his ID. He claims that the DMV will not print up a license that accommodates a space in a name. We did not complete the sale and did not release the firearm, because what was on the 4473 and what the customer claims is his legal name did not match the provided ID. Was this the right call? If it is true that the DMV will not issue an ID with a space in the name, what can customers do instead?
