4473 – Multiple Purchase Report Records Retention

posted on January 18, 2019

Q: Clarification of inquiry…I know that 4473’s must be maintained for 20 years (and shredded at 20 years and one day per FFL Guard suggestion). But I am unclear about storage requirements for 4473’s that were denied or refused after a NICS check and 3310 (Multiple Sale) forms. Upon looking at the 3310 form in hopes that something was written in the directions, I noticed that we were supposed to be attaching the 3310- page three to the 4473. We have been storing them separately. In the case of a multiple sale occurring over several days, do we attach page three to the first day? The second date? Make a copy so both 4473 form have a copy attached? Lastly, can we shred page one after faxing to the ATF to reduce stored paperwork? Thanks for your patience and information. I really want to make sure I have it right before re-organizing twenty years of records.
