Q: When entering a customer in to our retail point of sale system (POS), we use the customers Drivers Licence number (DL) as their customer number. When creating the customer in our POS we do not use any preceding “0”s of the individuals DL due to reporting tools that we have with the POS not able to recognize these additional “0”s of the DL number. In North Carolina, as well as other states, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has started issuing DLs with multiple “0”s at the beginning of the number, on any new or renewed Drivers Licenses they are producing. Now that we have gone begun using an “Electronic 4473” feature we must enter the customers DL during the transfer of a serialized item in the “Electronic 4473” software during the disposition. This electronic copy is printed, signed by customer and stored as required. The question is: Does the DL number that is produced and printed on the “Electronic 4473” copy have to have all of the preceding “0”s that are on the individual purchasers DL?
